Short Overview
The Association of Speleological Explorers (ASE) is a non-governmental organization focused on scientific study and environmental protection with the main office located in the city of Resita, Romania. ASE is a member of the Romanian Federation of Speleology, the Foundation for Youth of Caras Severin and the Banatia Tourist Club. Karstic areas and protected areas constitute the main priority for action of scientific study, protection and conservation by the association's members.
ASE has the following objectives :
» Conserving and protecting natural resources; administrating protected areas; combating and controlling pollution; protecting karstic phenomenon.
» Speleological studies (through exploration, topography, removing obstructions to possible caves and cave-diving); studies of hydrology, paleontology, archeology, biology, chemistry, climatology, etc. in caves).
» Creation and management of a complete database in the departments mentioned, assure the accessibility of information on an international level (ie. Internet).
» Development and promotion of tourist regions and tourist services.
» Creating, promoting and/or editing visual arts materials (i.e. film, photography, maps, etc.) that promote natural and environmental protection or speleology.
» Conservation of cultural and/or historic resources;
» Organization to aid and intervene in critical situations in caves or mountain zones (ie rescue, first aid, first response, "Salvaspeo," etc).
» Educative action to students, youth, administrative bodies and the local/regional community.
» Protection of the rights of authors within the association.
» Aiding and promoting volunteerism and public action.
» Creating opportunity for cultural exchanges as well as better relations between Romanians around the world.
» Creating affiliates of the association; becoming members/partners of national and international networks and federations.
» Collaboration with NGO's, local and central administrations, public services, mass-media, commercial societies and individual persona for reasons or purpose of the any or all the above objectives.
At the end of 2004, there were 49 members of ASER, of which :
- active members = 8
- members = 41
- partner members = 11
- volunteer members = 10
- honorary members = 2
Of the organization's members, 65% live in Resita, 5% are from other areas of Romania and 30% are living in Germany, Italy, Hungary, America and Canada.

ASE's Mission is to increase the degree of awareness and protection of the natural environment.
